At the height of his career in the mid-1930s, Leroy Anderson began arranging for Arthur Fiedler's Boston Pops Orchestra. Later, Fiedler encouraged him to write his own tunes for the Pops. His compositions, more than 50 in number, virtually define the sound of the contemporary American pops orchestra. Blue Tango was a #1 hit in 1951, juxtaposing the charismatic melody over a traditional tango pulse. The work captured the spirit of an era. Duration: 3:00

From composer Steven Bryant comes this simple, chorale-like work that captures the reflective calm of dusk, paradoxically illuminated by the fiery hues of sunset. Dusk is intended as a short, passionate evocation of this moment of dramatic stillness.

Finally, a fantastic transcription for full orchestra of this much-beloved string piece! While true to the original, the addition of the winds serves to provide even deeper sonority and allows some flexibility in the number of string and wind players needed for a complete performance.

It’s the musical find of the century! A previously unknown Gershwin work, brought to light with the help of Michael Feinstein, who worked closely with Ira Gershwin from 1977 to 1983. This engaging character piece, with its fresh harmonies, sophisticated jazz rhythms and unmistakable signature style is pure Gershwin from beginning to end. The work is relatively short, making it especially suitable for programming as an encore.

The classic cinematic tale of King Kong has made its mark with another generation of movie lovers with this year's blockbuster film by Peter Jackson. James Newton Howard's musical backdrop is filled with powerful, dramatic, and beautiful themes, all included in this suite for the concert stage.

Remember the word “fire” when preparing this music. It is powerful, dynamic and exciting music with infectious rhythmic feel, emphasized by the rhythm section and the counterpoint. Written for the Stan Kenton Band as one of the seven movements of Cuban Fire Suite, this piece makes Latin jazz perfect for the orchestra! (4:30)

“Millennium,” recorded this year by Alfred for the first time, was first released in 1998. This contemporary-sounding overture is extremely powerful and full of emotion from beginning to end. After a foreboding introduction, the heroic main theme is introduced by the brass section in unison, accompanied by the entire orchestra in a percussive, marcato style. A lyrical subordinate theme of extreme beauty follows, first stated by unison cellos, then picked up by the entire orchestra. The third and final section is a wild and energetic march, pitting brass against woodwinds and strings, leading into a final, majestic restatement of the main theme. Richard Meyer's colourful and imaginative scoring features every section of the symphony orchestra, resulting in a wonderfully mature-sounding, yet playable, ‘tour de force’ for the student orchestra.

The Mineola was written in 1890 by John W. Hawd and arranged for full orchestra for the Centennial Celebration of the Villlage of Mineola, New York (1906 - 2006). Located approximately 25 miles East of New York City on Long Island, Mineola is the governing “seat” of Nassau County. The name Mineola was derived from the Algonquin “Meniolagamika” which means “a friendly and pleasant village”. The Mineola Waltz was premiered on January 29, 2006 by the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra. Founded in 1984 by its director, Louis Panacciulli, the NPSO continues to maintain a year round performance schedule. This charming, lilting waltz will be a welcome addition to any concert setting and in particular that Spring Pops and “summer in the park in the under the gazebo“concert. The Mineola has a light, Viennese quality that will delight audiences of all ages.

The music of Grieg is expressed very well in this two-part suite for full orchestra. The melodies are familiar, and Merle Isaac's fine arrangement is an excellent choice for either concert or contest usage. (6:17) American Grade 3.5

Staged in four movements, this charming suite of characteristic Tatarian Dances begins with the spirited 'Sabantui-Spring Dance.' A lovely musical depiction is the focus of the second movement entitled 'Sarman River,' characterized with flowing melodic lines. The third and fourth movements, 'Harvest Dance' and 'Wedding Dance,' occur without a break yet the contrasting styles offer a diverse variety of textures. Duration: 14:00

The charm of this work lies in the excellent construction and contrast in style and color. Students have always enjoyed playing it, because everyone gets the melody at some point and there are joyous solo passages for the upper woodwinds. Originally published in 1958, and still on state lists, this new edition is true to the original with only a few articulations and bowings added. (4:10)

A fantastic full symphonic experience for the full orchestra! “The winds of Poseidon” joins “The Isle of Calypso” in the Second Symphony from the pen of Robert W. Smith. This work, the second movement of the symphony, is based on the classic story, The Odyssey. Odysseus is the shipwrecked warrior who wanders the land and sea for ten years, and this bold musical statement captures the essence of the powerful winds and waves that propel Odysseus on his journey. The middle section was inspired by the tale of the Sirens, whose beautiful and captivating singing lured sailors to their deaths on the rocks. The genius of the composer is strongly in evidence in this gigantic musical tale.
