Hailed by Tchaikovsky as “a colossal masterpiece of instrumentation”, Rimsky-Korsakov's “Capriccio Espagnol” has delighted audiences since its premiere in 1887. The melodies used in the piece go back to themes sketched by the composer for a virtuoso work for solo violin and orchestra. After changing his mind, Rimsky decided to make the work a display piece for the entire orchestra. This arrangement features two sections of the original capriccio: the “Alborada” (morning serenade) in 2/4 and the “Fandango of the Asturias” (a dance traditionally played with guitar and castanet accompaniment) in 3/4. Tastefully arranged by Richard Meyer, Rimsky Korsakov's flashy showpiece is now playable by the less-experienced orchestra.

In the early 1700s, London high society delighted in evening pleasure trips on the River Thames. These leisurely trips were often accompanied by a floating orchestra-a whole barge-load of musicians playing 'water serenades.' Handel composed suites of 'water music' for such festive occasions. This vigorous tune is one of his most famous, and your students will instantly take to its catchy syncopations. The excellent antiphonal writing will foster 'section' pride in your group, as the melody bounces around from strings to woodwinds to brass.

Schubert composed his incidental music to the Romantic drama Rosamunde, Princess of Cypress in less than three weeks, finishing just two days before the play's premiere in December of 1823. Not much time was left to rehearse the music, and no time at all to compose an overture. In fact, Schubert never did compose an overture to Rosamunde, but instead used an overture already composed for the drama The Magic Harp. While Rosamunde survived for only two performances, Schubert's charming music lives on. Festive and lyrical themes abound in this very playable arrangement that has been carefully crafted to preserve the sound of the original. A great way to introduce your students to one of the early Romantic period's great masters!
