Recorded by the Bob Mintzer Big Band on the CD “Old School – New Lessons” (MCG Jazz), this inventive original for proficient groups takes the Latin guaguanco rhythm to an entirely new destination. A show-stopping tour de force! Dave Brubeck's fabulous tune from his classic quartet album Time Out. Arranger Kris Berg worked hard on this chart to capture the essence of Brubeck. The meter changes from 9/8 to 12/8 Afro-Cuban groove with the Brubeck rhythm patterns. Solo space for alto 1, trumpet 2 and drums. Lead trumpet goes up to high C. This is an exceptional chart! Adapted as a mambo, Michael Mossman pulls out all the stops on this unique and exciting setting of Clifford Brown's jazz standard. The brass section screams out the melody while the saxes fill in blazing counterlines and a soli of their own. Solos are flexible and the rhythm section is called upon to propel the entire chart in an energized and vibrant style.

This is a must-have solo feature for alto saxophone! Dave Wolpe is one of the finest writers ever and this chart is one of his very best. With a Kenton-esque rubato introduction, Dave proceeds with a ballad style but hold on to your reeds, the double time tempo swings hard. With some great ensemble writing, Dave sends the alto soloist off in grand style. After some solo space the chart returns to the ballad tempo leading into two fermatas creating a dramatic ending. A Brazilian style samba, Buds is an outstanding showcase for a jazz trumpet soloist. Brilliantly arranged by Alan Baylock, this composition by jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker opens up with the melody stated by 2nd trumpet, alto, tenor, 1st trombone and guitar. The ensemble develops the melody further leading into the solo section where the ensemble plays a smooth samba groove as background support to the 2nd trumpet soloist who builds the intensity. Auxiliary percussion featuring shaker and cowbell can really enhance this chart. The brass range takes lead trumpet up to written E-flat and lead bone to B-flat. This monster chart is directly from the Benny Goodman library. Transcribed and re-created by Jeff Hest, not many tunes can match the energy of this big band classic. Solos are for clarinet (solo part,) trumpet, tenor, and trombone with solos written out along with the chord changes. Written for Walt Disney World, Sammy's masterful touch shows in this fiery medley of Mickey Mouse March and Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah. Tenor sax gets a chance to solo in a quasi gospel style vamp near the end.

An original by Gordon Goodwin, this is a jazzy half-time groove chart. This chart is not as challenging as some of Gordon’s other charts, but it will still work the band. This exciting and well-crafted composition features a light and breezy samba style and some marvelous ensemble writing. A duet for alto and trumpet is featured on the head, as well as later in the chart for solos. From John La Barbera's latest big band recording, here is the title cut – a masterful arrangement of this little-known Ellington gem. The tempo is moderate in an African/Latin vein and features a wealth of interesting orchestrational colours within the context of the big band. Featured solos include tenor or soprano sax and piano. Super samba! From our man Victor Lopez, this chart is totally hot and WILL challenge the band. It’s a jazz-reggae groove composed and arranged by Gordon Goodwin for the Big Phat Band. Floating Home is not technically difficult but the lead trumpet range is a challenge, as you would expect with Gordon’s charts. This is a somewhat mellow chart but has energy and punches. Recorded by The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on their CD “Absolutely!” this light Latin setting opens with a unique intro featuring guitar and arco bass. What follows is a lush ensemble statement with drums playing on brushes leading to an extended solo section for piano. Very nice!

Style LOOSE SWING
As recorded by the Bob Mintzer Big Band on the album Swing Out (MCG Jazz), this loose swing original is a perfect programming choice for proficient groups. Based on the C Ionian mode, the composer uses a complex and dense harmonic approach as evidenced in voicings throughout this innovative work. Due to the chord clusters, blend and balance are of utmost importance. A solo is provided for trumpet, during which time the rhythm section allows the player space to improvise freely before initiating a groove. Duration 7:15

With Arturo Sandoval's newest CD “Hot House” the trumpet master strongly asserts himself as a force to be reckoned with in the area of big band jazz. This is the lead-off tune to the CD and it combines the traditional Cuban dance style with a bit of contemporary funk. The result is a sultry mix that is both dynamic and powerful. Includes solos for Tenor and Trumpet.

Les Hooper always delivers very hip funk charts and this one is no exception. With a terrific shout chorus and a funky Steely Dan type groove, solos are for tenor 1 and trumpet 2, and lead trumpet range it to written D. Groovy baby! Duration: 4:21

In the Basie tradition of high-powered flag wavers, this Mark Taylor original is an impressive concert opener. After the intro, bones and tenors take the lead, but the ensemble builds quickly with some full ensemble hits. The solo section features dueling tenors and there is a short drum solo before the final chorus. A real scorcher!

Here's a fresh new take on a traditional jazz standard. The style is still uptempo swing, and the saxes maintain a fair share of the spotlight along with ensemble hits and solo spots for drums. However, there is a brief excursion into 5/4 and a few other meter surprises that help give this outstanding chart a contemporary edge.

This funk chart was originally recorded by the Yellowjackets for their Time Squared CD. Filled with unexpected twists and turns, this big band version requires a triplet-based swing feel similar to hip-hop. Duration 6:40. Grade Advanced Style FUNK

Originally written for the Stan Kenton Orchestra and featured on the new Mark Taylor/Steve Fidyk Big Band recording “A Perfect Match” (heard here), this is a challenging yet rewarding samba for mature bands. Primarily a feature for flugelhorn and trombone, the full ensemble answers with hot unison lines and screaming punches. This one demands attention!

You probably think you know this song...that is until you hear John Clayton's arrangement! He includes the rarely played verse, along with a slow ballad tempo and gorgeous woodwind colors to create a masterpiece for the jazz ensemble. This chart goes to show that good jazz isn't always loud and fast! In addition, Mr. Clayton's harmonic palette is nothing short of stunning. Latin-swing-Latin! If you like the Latin thing but are more comfortable with swing, this is the perfect chart to clearly teach the different rhythms, accents and styles of Latin and swing all in the same fun arrangement. In this Victor Lopez original, the Latin head is stated by trombone, tenor, and trumpet, followed by a swing section with the bass player walking, and then right back to the Latin groove. It goes from a powerful build-up into a flexible solo space to a tenor solo and right into an interlude with a true Latin percussion section. Check out the super-sax soli for your saxes. Hullabaloo is a contemporary New Orleans groove chart that mesmerizes! Composer/arranger Alan Baylock delivers a very exciting arrangement with melody lines that are played by alto, tenor, trumpet and trombone with solo space for each. There's always time for the blues. This original by John Clayton (and recorded by the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on “Heart and Soul”) is set in a bluesy and relaxed tempo and provides lots of room for soloists to “holler” at each other. After the opening conversation between two trumpets, the sax section lays down the main theme followed by answers provided by the brass. Solos for tenor, alto, trombone, piano follow, and finally the full band takes us the rest of the way. This is a great chart to settle back on and just swing!

This up-tempo samba on this wonderful Cole Porter standard is a great vehicle for your band—not difficult yet very effective. The melody and solo space (written-out solos) feature alto and trumpet and a nice interlude band shout chorus. Lead trumpet range is to written B, above the staff. Duration: 3:11

This is a very clever jazz waltz by jazz legend Dave Brubeck. Dave Wolpe has arranged Brubeck's composition and created a superb chart featuring alto saxophone and trumpet with the melody and solo space. This chart will keep your band on its toes, as the swing waltz is a little tricky. This is an adventure in 3/4 time; it has great chord changes, too.

This monster chart from John Clayton was written specifically for his clinic presentation at the IAJE convention where it was rehearsed and premiered in January 2005. After the rhythm section sets the tone, the trumpets state the first “calling” then pass it along to the rest of the ensemble. This amazing composition grows organically throughout as tension and release points are explored and the final climax is realized through a layering effect from section to section.

Style STRAIGHT 8TH FEEL
Inspired by the classic 1959 Miles Davis album Kind Of Blue, other source material comes from a traditional Appalachian tune titled Cluck Old Hen. Upbeat and lighthearted, the chart borrows a 32 measure progression used in Miles Davis’ composition So What. The optional vibes part adds a lot to this piece. Brass ranges are moderate, and the bass part contains chord changes and suggested lines. This is an ideal opportunity for your group to enjoy the music of one of today’s greatest jazz composers. As performed by the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, this Michael Abene chart opens in a relaxed swing style in a moderate tempo. Michael brings as much of himself to this chart as the original song itself, as he weaves in new material creating an arrangement that builds to a hard-hitting full ensemble climax. Here’s a great salsa original for proficient groups that employs a strong melody supported by authentic Latin harmonies and solid orchestration. To ensure the proper groove, the piano montunos are fully notated with chord symbols provided most of the time (pianists are encouraged to comp if familiar with the salsa style). The guitar part consists primarily of chords and slashes, with melodic material notated in some sections. The three solo sections have chord changes cued for guitar, trombone and baritone saxophone. Fiery! Hot! Burnin'! Smokin'! Searing! Scorching! Get the picture? This is Victor Lopez doing what he does best -- creating powerful and exciting original Latin charts. Macumba has a few challenging ensemble moments, but if you have the rhythmic chops, you'll love this chart. There is some (written-out) jazz for 2nd trumpet in harmony mute, and the lead trumpet has a unison line to written high E. A nice sax soli is the icing on this cake. An outstanding feature chart. The Pythodd Club in Rochester, NY was where the famed La Barbera brothers were first exposed to real, live jazz and the B3 organ was often a part of these groups. Here John uses the organ as a center piece but surrounds it with exuberant proclamations from the rest of the band in a smokin’ shuffle chart. Solos are included for organ, guitar, and tenor sax.

Jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker's funky Brazilian samba has been brilliantly arranged by Mike Crotty. This clever tune will stick in your mind for weeks! Randy has recorded and performed his original composition worldwide with rave reviews, and with the first play through and you'll know why -- it is a captivating melody. Mike Crotty, former arranger for the USAF Airmen of Note, has creatively scored The Sleaze Factor for experienced jazz ensembles to feature trumpet and alto saxophone with melody/solos. Think of Take the A Train with a contemporary flair and you have the idea behind this inventive chart by Alan Baylock.
