Recorded by Patti Austin with James Ingram in 1983, this smooth jazz classic has a nice contemporary rock groove for jazz ensemble. Using an interesting harmonic structure based on minor chords, this chart features the saxes on the melody, a soli for trombones, and funky ensemble riffs. This is a solidly scored chart for young players.

Using a nice mix of small group playing contrasted with full ensemble sections, here is a very playable chart on this distinctive Monk standard. An alto/trumpet duet starts things off, followed by a statement with six horns plus guitar and vibes on the theme. Also included are solos for trumpet and alto sax.

This familiar standard is arranged here in a medium up-tempo swing style and features your entire trumpet section. All parts include written sample solos, and it is constructed so that a single player can handle all the solo parts. Later, the trumpet section trades phrases with the drummer and a short ensemble shout takes you the rest of the way.

Recorded by The Association in 1967, this tune became one of the signature ballads of the decade. This nicely scored arrangement features a trombone solo, the trombone section, and also a solo for alto sax. The underlying rock pulse gives this chart added life and a nice groove.

From the show Golden Boy, this jazz standard composed by Charles Strouse is tastefully arranged by Rick Stitzel in a Latin ballad style with a bossa/bolero feel. When it comes to Latin compositions, it just doesn’t get any better than the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. This classic tune is nicely adapted for young players featuring the brass on the “one note” melody and the saxes on the “more than one note” bridge. The easy-flowing groove and solid ensemble writing help insure a great sounding arrangement for any band.

Another fabulous adventure by the chicken-master Kris Berg, and this time he plucks another prize-winner with “R U Chicken?” Written solos are included for trumpet and tenor sax, and the lead trumpet range is up to written B-flat. Currently a hit on the smooth jazz circuit, this tune was originally recorded by Herb Alpert back in 1979. This well-written chart goes down easy and will sound great with experienced players as well as younger groups.

Playing jazz should be fun and this carefully constructed arrangement for young players will certainly help make this happen. Alto and trumpet take the melody at the top, then the rest of the band joins in for a lively romp!

You don't normally associate the music of Prince with jazz ensembles. However, this outstanding arrangement draws inspiration from the funky Herbie Hancock version and provides a great vehicle for ensemble playing as well as soloing.
