AATTB with Rhythm Section. In 2007, the Goethe Institute invited me on a trip to Indonesia where I was supposed to record a CD. I was taking along a whole series of big band arrangements of Indonesian folk songs. “Di Sudut Bibirmu”, an ancient Molukkan love song – the title of which might be translated as “The Smile of Your Lips” - was one of the tunes I had written an arrangement for. Since it had originally been arranged for vocalist and big band, it seemed an excellent choice to turn it into a soulful version for saxophone and rhythm section featuring the lead alto

SATTB/AATTB. What is initially just a cloud of mysterious sounds turns into a contemplative melody played by the soprano. But then the five saxophones start swinging, the baritone begins walking and, finally, all of them launch into a soli section. This piece tells a personal story, like the great jazz ballads of the past. Advanced players will find it a challenge to intonation and rhythmic feel. Duration: 5:15

SAATB. Bach probably composed Fantasia and Fugue around 1725 at the beginning of his Leipzig years. Hardly any of his keyboard works is so closely associated with his organ works. The remarks ‚manualiter’ in two of the surviving manuscripts suggest that it was also played on the organ. The character of the Fantasia is serious and grave. Even the interludes, despite their lighter texture, maintain an overall contemplative character. Its concerto form is strictly symmetrical. The main theme appears four times: in a-minor, e-minor, d-minor and finally a-minor. Three interludes often employ only three parts and effectively contrast the full harmony of the main theme. The four-part double fugue is an example of Bach’s unique contrapuntal craftsmanship. He combines two notably contrasting themes: the first is diatonic, rhythmic and agile while the second consists of a descending chromatic line. It appears around the center of the movement after a short cadence cesura. Surprisingly, it is immediately presented in stretto form. At the end both themes are combined three times.
