The arrangerI was inspired to arrange this old gospel song by an elderly fisherman from Tancook Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. It’s his favourite song. It’s a simple 16 measure pentatonic tune, but this arrangement contains a variety of styles, tempo changes, and reharmonizations. It’s an enjoyable arrangement to play. Have fun with it.

AATTB. The so-called Zwiefache is the only Bavarian-Austrian folk dance which permanently alternates between different meters. The rhythmical flow of this piece - mainly determined by the baritone saxophone and both tenor saxophones – has to be maintained without letup. Its dance-like nature must constantly be felt.This is music of the cheerful kind; therefore, as is the case with ragtime, it is not necessary to imbue it with additional joyfulness. Jazz sound and jazz phrasing are essential to its performance. The Brunnwart is a historical restaurant in Munich/Bavaria with a small but very nice beer garden.

The cheerful and expressive pop-jazz song November Spring was originally written for saxophone quartet Wheeze (two altos, tenor and baritone). It is a feature for the 1st alto (optional soprano part is included – the alto part goes up to high A!), which introduces the melody and plays a long improvised solo. Also included is an optional 2nd tenor part (or optional 3rd alto) to perform this piece in the Cologne Saxophone Quintet version. Playing November Spring is not only a challenge, but it is also fun to do!
