SATB. “Global Tour is a journey through four of my favourite styles of music: funk, jazz, klezmer, and tango. As opposed to a commission or an idea from my publisher, this piece began without any preconception. A small germ of a funk phrase led to a finished tune, and somehow I thought to follow it with a breezy West-Coast jazz waltz. With the addition of Abraham Goldfaden’s 1880 Jewish lullaby, Rozhinkes mit Mandlen, (Raisins with Almonds) I thought I had completed something called Funk, Jazz, and Klez, but in a midnight dream a propulsive tango theme to tag on clean jerked me out of bed!” (Mike Curtis)

For Ravel, the year 1917 was marked by his dearly beloved Basque mother’s death and the decease of many of his friends who had lost their lives on the battlegrounds of World War I. Hence, the suite he finished in that same year can altogether be considered as a work in reverence for the deceased: Each movement is dedicated to one of his friends killed in action. Its title Tombeau (tomb) had already been used by the Baroque composer F. Couperin for his funeral music. True to the spirit of that ancient music honoring the dead, the composer furthermore adheres consciously to the musical forms and practices of the clavecinist era. Due to its classical, rather sonatina-like character, the Tombeau does not radiate an atmosphere of mourning - despite it being committed to the memory of the deceased - but a light if cool serenity. In its order and choice of movements, this arrangement for saxophone quartet observes the orchestral version written by Ravel himself. The original version for piano includes two additional parts: Fugue and Toccata. Yet, they have been left out in this arrangement (as was also done in the orchestral version) since they do not really conform to the tonal quality of the saxophone quartet.

The cheerful and expressive pop-jazz song November Spring was originally written for saxophone quartet Wheeze (two altos, tenor and baritone). It is a feature for the 1st alto (optional soprano part is included – the alto part goes up to high A!), which introduces the melody and plays a long improvised solo. Also included is an optional 2nd tenor part (or optional 3rd alto) to perform this piece in the Cologne Saxophone Quintet version. Playing November Spring is not only a challenge, but it is also fun to do!

AATB. Patchwork was created out of the necessity to write an easy-to-play, melodious and swinging piece for students, which also contains notated solo parts. The piece keeps to an A-B-A form moving along in a varied and rhythmical way. The following 16-bar alto solo is accompanied by the alto 2 and the tenor saxophone playing rhythmical riffs and by the baritone in a walking bass manner. At the beginning, the tenor saxophone solo is merely supported by the baritone playing quarter notes until, finally, the complete set of instruments joins in and leads back to the theme.

SATB. Skunktown Beanery begins with a jaunty rhythmic interplay with the baritone pitted against the three other voices. The interplay continues when the soprano breaks away (m. 23) to play an infectious melody which seems to float over the others. This culminates with the ensemble driving like a well-oiled big band (m. 39). There is a return to the soprano melody juxtaposed over the rhythmic interplay of the others (m. 56) which develops rhythmically, leading to an improvised jazz solo in the soprano. The solo is modal, visiting five different tonal areas until returning to the original D7#9. The other voices provide rhythmic and harmonic accompaniment throughout. After an improvised soprano cadenza (m. 139) there is a recapitulation section followed by a short coda (m. 196) to end the piece. This piece very much hinges on the soprano player’s ability to improvise, as well as the baritone player’s ability to play with great rhythmic accuracy and to be able to drive the ensemble in much the same way a bass player does a jazz ensemble. Skunktown Beanery is the first movement of “The Blastinoff Concerto” for saxophone quartet. There are five movements in the “Concerto” with several movements utilizing non-traditional combinations of saxophones. The piece lends itself well to a contemporary jazz feel.

These saxophone quartets are available together with a play-along CD, offering every musician of the quartet the possibility of working on his part at home – in addition to quartet rehearsals. The written parts do not include the phrasings of the improvisations on the CD, which is meant to induce the students to imitate those phrasings. Imitation is an essential step on the students´ way to learning how to phrase in jazz. These solos are by no means obligatory. The notated chords serve as a basis for those who wish to improvise and create their own solos
