Barbarito’s Dance is dedicated to one of the most important Cuban flute players, Barbarito Torres. The contradanza, a Cuban music style typical of the early 19th century, was influenced by French salon music and ranked among those dance rhythms that were most popular with the Cuban high society of those days. It is generally notated in binary form and has a cheerful character due to its lively pace. The piece brings into prominence the cinquillo, a rhythmic cell that is considered to be of great significance in traditional Cuban music. In its original form, this style of music did not feature improvisations; yet, the theme on hand notated in a tempo characteristic of the contradanza melts into a son montuno, which then provides the basis for the execution of improvised solos. For want of opportunities to improvise, the composition includes various solistic cycles written for the two clarinets, emphasizing - between phrases and rhythmic cells – those aspects that are essential to the performance of Cuban music

Although considering himself to be primarily a jazz performer, classical music – above all instrumental baroque music and Viennese Classicism - have always been very important to Claus Henry Koch. For quite a long time, particular elements characterizing these styles of music have occasionally been integrated in some of his jazz compositions. With these pieces, he is now presenting his very first purely classically inspired compositions for 2 woodwind instruments. The duets have been designed as both performance pieces as well as educational music for teaching ensemble playing. Not compatible with the Saxophone edition.

A couple dancing tango finds its analogy in the two clarinets. The dancers are moving on a fictitious stage – different constellations develop in this room, various relationships between the instruments come into being. The thirteen minute tangos trace these different constellations. They create miniature pictures of the situations, sketches, each of them with an approximate duration of one minute, grouped into two units of six minute tangos each and rounded off with the somewhat longer 'Canción'.

The purposed of these duets is to provide practice for the rhythms which most frequently cause problems for pupils. They start with the top part playing the rhythm in question while the lower part breaks it up into its component parts. The the top part plays the rhythm over the beat of the tempo and finally both parts play the same rhythm. This book is compatible with the Saxophone Edition (Two Saxophones of the same pitch). By using both books, they could be played by alto saxophone and clarinet.
