Studies and Etudes  Up a Level         

The Second Book of Practical Studies is designed to logically extend the techniques already presented in the First Book and also to introduce and develop new techniques and rhythms that will offer a challenge to the intermediate student. Through the use of slightly more difficult and more extended studies, it is hoped that the material included in this book may more fully develop general musicianship and more feeling for style and interpretation and thus act as a foundation for solo literature.

The next step for students who have completed the advanced level method for their instrument. The full-page etudes in this series, key-centered and supported by scale and arpeggio exercises, take the student to that next level of performance wherein their accumulated skills allow them to play full-length performance pieces with a high level of musicianship and competence. As such, many states include these pieces in their all-state audition lists.

40 Progressive Studies. Following on from Starter Studies, this collection generally contains longer pieces suitable for the developing young musician. Specifically tailored for each instrument, Skilful Studies introduces the concept of phrasing by suggesting suitable breathing points and takes the player into new keys with extended instrumental ranges. New notes are introduced in a gradual and logical manner; woodwind players are taken into their second octave, learning to cross the ‘break’ as smoothly as possible. Grade 4-5

Solo transcriptions can be an interesting document of a person’s style but are also so personal and idiosyncratic that one can get frustrated in trying to play them without mistakes. This book contains a series of studies to extend the playing and reading techniques, to illustrate harmonic and melodic shapes and possibilities, bolster endurance, and most of all train the ear to hear moving often intricate melodic lines in a musical sense. These pieces are structured in a way that challenges the registers of the instrument but also allows the student to learn how to pace him/herself. The shapes of the line will naturally show the practitioner where and how he/she can rest while still playing. The studies could serve as tutti passage or solis for brass and/or saxophones
