Catalina March, an original composition by Steve Hodges, contains elements of both traditional and contemporary marches. The spirited opening theme features a playful give-and-take between the brass and the upper woodwinds. A contrasting minor trio section is presented by the clarinets, saxophones and horns before returning to a charming woodwind variation of the initial presentation. Following an effective modulation, the piece finishes with a powerful restatement of the opening theme with woodwind countermelodies complementing the strong brass and percussion. As the title implies, here is an exciting and powerful composition for very young players. Written in minor and using a single tempo throughout, this piece provides nice feature spots for your horns/saxes, as well as trumpets. October 28, 2007 began as a typically beautiful Southern California day. But as the composer sat at his piano writing this composition, he became aware of a major firestorm raging within a few miles of his house. Dense smoke filled the air and a steady stream of helicopters flew into the local reservoir to fill up with water to battle the flames. John O’Reilly has crafted a remarkable piece that captures the drama of this event. Duration: 3:25

Here's a marvelous piece in a variety of styles that uses a mix of original themes and folk songs from the Highlands.

Named after a well-loved children's Halloween game, this wonderful selection for young band brings the spooky sounds of haunted houses and Halloween to life. Whatever time of year you play this piece, it will give your low brass and woodwinds some prominent melodic material, makes clever use of novel percussion, and even includes a flute section scream!

Percussion feature. 'Glock Around the Clock' really gives your Percussion section something to work on! It describes the busy day in the life your Glockenspiel player, who never has quite enough time for everything. The day begins with the ticking clock (temple blocks) then the alarm goes (triangle), to be wound up again (guiro). A sort of Perpetuum Mobile is started by the Glock - always in a hurry ... never enough time ... caught in the traffic (klaxon)... even the cuckoo clock somehow becomes discordent. Looking for some music to get the audience more involved in your concert? Here it is! A medium-rock groove sets the stage for an eighth-note motive that signals the band and audience to give “high fives” throughout the piece. Soloists on the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and clarinet are featured on two-measure phrases that lead to an exciting “drum-off” between the snare and tom players. Moore Street Rag is an energetic piece that was composed for the young band to enjoy the various elements of ragtime music. Each section is featured playing the syncopated melodies and counter melodies and the low brass and woodwinds provide the steady rhythmic bass line. The trombones present the initial melody and are prominently featured throughout. With precise articulation patterns and many chromatic motives, this fresh tribute to ragtime music will be fun for the young musician to rehearse and will be a hit with the audience as well!

The south-western US state of Arizona has more than its fair share of stunning landscapes, natural phenomena and National Monuments. Best known is the Grand Canyon, but there are also numerous deserts, a petrified forest, extinct volcanoes and the huge Sunset Crater. Not surprisingly, it has featured as the backdrop to many Western movies. The Painted Desert is a narrow, crescent-shaped arc about 160 miles long which begins near the Grand Canyon and varies in width from 10 to 35 miles. It is largely void of vegetation and years of erosion by wind and rain have exposed sedimentary layers of rock up to 250 million years old. Chemical differences in the various layers result in an effect not unlike a multicoloured layer cake with contrasting hues of red, orange and pink, blue, grey and lavender creating a silent and barren landscape which looks like it has been hand-painted. As with much of the planet’s stunning landscapes all the observer can do is stand and stare. Duration: 3:47

This delightful toe-tapper is arranged from bits and pieces of some of America's favourite patriotic melodies. Although very playable, there are some interesting harmonic twists and turns, and a few surprises to keep the audience engaged. “America the Beautiful,” “Yankee Doodle,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “My Country ’Tis of Thee” are all interwoven in a march tempo to create a terrific arrangement to close any concert! Written in a stately moderate tempo, the march opens with a majestic brass fanfare followed by a statement of the melody by the clarinets. Take your band back in time with this well-crafted arrangement by Mark Williams of an exquisite set of dances by Renaissance composer Tielman Susato. The three dances, 'La Mourisque,' 'Saltarelle' and 'Ronde,' serve as an excellent introduction to Renaissance style.

Jeremiah Clarke (c. 1674-1707) belongs to the generation of English composers following that of Henry Purcell. Not much is known about his early life, but by 1685 he was a chorister of the Chapel Royal, a group of liturgical musicians attached to the court. He held the post of organist at Winchester College from 1692 but later returned to London as Master of the Choristers at St Paul’s Cathedral. The Prince of Denmark’s March is perhaps his best-known work and was originally written for harpsichord, although Clarke later included it in a collection of pieces for wind instruments. Eric Osterling carefully takes Bach's famous Minuet in G and transforms it into a Rockin' Bach - a rock tune in 4/4. Rockin' Bach is carefully written so that every section gets a chance to play the melody.

Here is a Russian classic that never ceases to stir the emotions of the audience and band alike.
