The solo line is particularly well set against the band as it rarely travels to the lower register of the flute. The work opens with an extended section of lyricism followed by skittish dance. This work was especially composed for Rachel Smith and the Regimental Band of Her Majesty’s Coldtream Guards. It is essentially rhapsodic in nature and derives much of it’s melodic material from the harmonic implication of the ‘Neapolitan Sixth’ chord – that of the flatten supertonic, mostly found in minor key tonalities. The composer gratefully acknowledges the assistance of Rachel Smith in editing the solo part for both performance and publication. For Violin, Clarinet, or Flute Solo and Band

This sensitive arrangement of a lovely French traditional song from the Auvergne features oboe (or flute) and euphonium (or tenor saxophone). Performance time 3’05”

The Pirates of Penzance is perhaps Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular operetta, and tells the story of Frederic, who was apprenticed to a band of tender-hearted, orphaned pirates. A Sullivan Ballad uses a hauntingly simple love duet, from the end of Act 2 ‘ Ah, leave me not to pine alone and desolate’ which is arranged here as a duet for flute and alto saxophone (or clarinet). Both performers and audience alike will love this beautiful duet.

Flute Solo/Concert Band

First published in 1979, this masterful work for solo flute and band is available again in this newly engraved edition. The solo part displays a variety of styles from beautifully expressive lyric lines to spirited faster passages, all supported wonderfully by the full ensemble. Duration: 8:30

This waltz is taken from the film music that Shostakovich composed for The Youth of Maxim. Ed Keeley has composed this attractive arrangement for flute and clarinet with concert band. Very enjoyable. Duration 2:20 American Grade 3

WHIRLWIND is a flute solo and (despite the title!) it will be found that a steady waltz tempo works best. Obviously, it is important that the accompaniment remains delicate and that dynamics are adhered to.
