Philip Sparke published a book of etudes, Super Solos in 2008, the third volume in a series flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone and euphoniu. A young German Flutist was so excited by these pieces that his father secretly comissioned an arrangement of three of the etudes. The solo line is particularly well set against the band as it rarely travels to the lower register of the flute. The work opens with an extended section of lyricism followed by skittish dance. This work was especially composed for Rachel Smith and the Regimental Band of Her Majesty’s Coldtream Guards. It is essentially rhapsodic in nature and derives much of it’s melodic material from the harmonic implication of the ‘Neapolitan Sixth’ chord – that of the flatten supertonic, mostly found in minor key tonalities. The composer gratefully acknowledges the assistance of Rachel Smith in editing the solo part for both performance and publication. WHIRLWIND is a flute solo and (despite the title!) it will be found that a steady waltz tempo works best. Obviously, it is important that the accompaniment remains delicate and that dynamics are adhered to.
