Brillante was commissioned by Peter Wilson for the British Bandsman Centenary Concert in 1987 and was first performed as a duet by Robert and Nicholas Childs. Later reworked a as solo with brass band accompaniment, it has become popular the world over - an accessible mix of sentiment and virtuosity! Something of a classic in its brass band and piano versions. Written in 1978, the work is constructed in three movements and is virtually a concerto for euphonium and band. The first movement begins with an unaccompanied motto theme, which uses all twelve notes of the scale but with a tonal feel. The slow second movement is based on an original song melody by the compsoer - The Eyes of God - and affords lyrical and richly expressive playing that is typically euphonium. movement three follows without a break - a capricious movement which ends triumphantly. This piece, written for solo euphonium and brass band, reflects the natural beauty and relaxing atmosphere of the islands. This set of variations on the well-known hymn tune ‘Holy, holy, holy!’ will make a most satisfying addition to the solo repertoire for euphonuim and concert band. It is in the traditional air varié form with an introduction, theme and 3 variations. The original melody (known as Nicaea) was composed by John Bacchus Dykes’ especially for Reginald Heber’s renowned hymn of praise and became universally popular when it was included in Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861.
