The recent Broadway musical All Shook Up features an entertaining story and music made famous by Elvis Presley. Fast-paced and loaded with well-known hits, this medley includes All Shook Up, Blue Suede Shoes, Can't Help Falling in Love, C'mon Everybody, Heartbreak Hotel, It's Now or Never, Jailhouse Rock, and Love Me Tender.

Ken Burns has created another masterpiece with his PBS series on World War II entitled The War. Here is the moving anthem featured throughout the series in a touching setting for band.

This beautifully constructed tone poem features a memorable lyric melody stated first by the horns and clarinets, and later by a trumpet duet accompanied by the brass section. Johnnie uses a nice blend of lighter textures with the woodwinds prominent, alternating with fuller sections voiced for the entire ensemble. Clouds That Sail in Heaven is a concert fanfare based on the hymn All Creatures of Our God and King. Even before the blockbuster movie of 2006, this musical was a hit on Broadway. Featuring a driving pulse and memorable tunes, Jay's energetic arrangement includes “Dreamgirls,” “And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going” and “Move (You're Stepping on My Heart).”

This charming and colourful work creates vivid images of Ireland. The rocky coast beckons you toward the ocean and a distant sound directs you to a village where a tin whistle and drumbeat create the music for dance and celebration. The beautiful scenery and peacefulness of this wonderful place come alive in this very accessible work for concert band.

This piece combines the simple, elegant thematic material of the Elizabethan church composer Tallis, expanded and modernized through the luxurious harmonies of Vaughan Williams. A setting for band has been long overdue, and Jay Bocook does a masterful job of transforming the original work for string orchestra into a magnificant setting for winds. Fantasia was used with great effect in the recent film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. 

Although this familiar hit was recorded by the group Europe more than 20 years ago, it remains a popular rock anthem even today. This solid arrangement for band is hard-hitting and true to the original.

Britain's singing sensation Imogen Heap has created breathtaking new sounds with her electronically manipulated vocal recordings. Hide and Seek features ethereal moods and rich harmonic textures and adapts wonderfully for band in this haunting and beautiful transcription from Jay Bocook.

This exciting overture opens with a fanfare section that emphasizes the brass and is active rhythmically as well as harmonically. A strong, full sound will result from the richly scored chromatic parallel triads. For musical contrast, the middle section is quasi-rubato and very lyrical, relying mainly on the woodwinds with low brass added later. The transition back to the original rhythmic fanfare is smoothly written and effectively brings the work to a close.

Invention For Band is a fantasia, or short overture, in free contrapuntal style. In the opening sections, the principal melody is played by most of the sections of the band with thematic variations. The faster allegro development section begins with a fiery motive that is quickly answered by the low brass and the low reed instruments. The percussion section provides both rhythmic drive and melodic colour with bells, chimes, xylophone and marimba. Emotionally powerful!

Showcasing the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, the hit musical Jersey Boys is a nostalgic look at some of the most popular songs of the 1960s. This fast-paced medley includes: “Big Girls Don't Cry,” “Can't Take My Eyes Off of You,” “December 1963 (Oh, What a Night),” “Rag Doll” and “Walk Like A Man.”

This dynamic march begins with a strong motif by the trumpets, accented by the woodwinds and low brass. The aggressive minor melody is passed from section to section and is supported by an active rhythmic accompaniment. A modulation into the final presentation of the melody brings the march to a dramatic conclusion.
