Catapulted forward by the “roaring forties” wind currents, the sleek and elegant sailing ships swept around the ever-dangerous Cape Horn as they navigated by the stars, “chasing Orion.” A dramatic new addition to the young band literature!

In western culture the richest heritage of folk music is undoubtedly of British origin. Lion City Festival was commissioned as one of the test pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010, an annual event at which school ensembles from throughout Singapore can receive gold, silver or bronze awards for their performance. The English name for Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, which has Sanskrit roots meaning ‘Lion City’. Lion City Festival is in the form of a quick march in ABA form. An opening fanfare leads to a perky march tune which is taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a legato trio section before the main theme returns in varied form. Roaring fun! From Kurt Weill’s “Three Penny Opera,” Jack Bullock has arranged the revered theme composed for the character Macheath, the swashbuckling thief nicknamed Mack the Knife. Charming!

Marching Winds was commissioned as the set piece for the Youth Festival Singapore 2010, a competition for all the youth wind orchestras in Singapore. As the title indicates, it is written in the form of a march. The opening fanfare leads directly to the modal main theme. It is contrasted by a second, legato theme, which builds to the climax of the piece. The main theme makes an apperance again before the piece comes to a finish. Duration: 2:25

Monticello is a beautiful historic estate that was home to Thomas Jefferson. The property is a mosaic of beautiful gardens, historic architecture, ingenious inventions, and panoramic views of the countryside. This piece endeavours to musically depict the characteristics of this historic landmark of American culture and history.

“The Huron Carol” is Canada's oldest Christmas carol, written in 1643 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary. The melody is from a tradition French folk song, Une Jeune Pucelle (A Young Maid). Intended as a gift and teaching aid to the Huron people, Brébeuf wrote the lyrics in their native language. The Moon of Winter is a powerful and moving adaptation of this carol for band that will enhance your next Christmas concert, adding a sense of reverence and honour

Mystique: a complex of attitudes developing around an idea and a special skill, essential in an activity. The attitude in this composition is that of the excitement, as well as the subtleties of percussion playing. The special skill is apparent in the featured percussion parts themselves.

Machu Picchu is the site of a pre-Columbian (1462AD) Inca ruin, often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas.” It is situated on a mountain ridge 8000 feet above the Urubamba Valley in Peru. American historian Hiram Bingham rediscovered the site and brought it to the attention of the world in 1911. Machu Picchu is now considered one the seven wonders of the modern world and is a highly visited tourist destination. Procession to Machu Picchu is written in a bolero style and brings to life visions of he Incas as they marched to the summit over 500 years ago.

This arrangement is derived from the music in Act 2 with Hansel and Greta lost and lying down to sleep in the woods. The Prologue begins with the sandman sprinkling sand on to the children's eyes. Hansel and Gretle respond by singing their Evening Prayer. In the Dream Pantomime a ladder reaches down from heaven and 14 angels are seen to surround the sleeping children.

The mysterious mood of the opening from “The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship” sets the tone for the magical music to come. Originally recorded by Neil Diamond in 1969, Sweet Caroline has grown in popularity over the years to where it is now commonly played at sporting events across the country, and has been featured on the TV series Glee. Sure to be a hit at any concert.

The unification of the Viking tribes is of great significance to the people living in the southwest region of Norway. The International School of Stavanger lies only one kilometer from a small fjord called Hafrsfjord where a monument, Swords in Stone, was constructed consisting of three large bronze swords stuck in an outcropping on the shore. The monument commemorates a battle which unified the Viking tribes of Norway under one king, Harald Hårfagre, or Harald the Fairhaired. According to legend, in 872 Harald invited the other tribal leaders to a meeting, then had his boats cut off their retreat and they battled until the other leaders submitted to Harald's rule. Harald then became the first king of Norway. The Swords of Stavanger seeks to provide a musical backdrop to this legend of Viking heroism and conquest.

Two Songs of Morning contains two beautifully contrasting melodies, scored to demonstrate the lush tonal capabilities of the concert band.
