Andalucía has always been a very musical land, and the Moors that occupied Andalucía for nearly 800 years have contributed greatly to its unique music and exotic dances. During the Civil War, this pivotal transportation point located on the Potomac River and Aquia Creek was an important hub for both north and south. In addition, it was a key link in the “network of freedom” for fugitive slaves. Paul Murtha pays tribute to this historical site with this great-sounding Sousa style march at an easy level.

Areopogus [ar-ee-op-uh-guhs], “the hill of Ares (Mars),” was a rocky hill located northwest of the Acropolis in ancient Athens, Greece. This original Ralph Ford work, created with eerie modal melodic content, was inspired by this alien hill. The work is composed in G minor; your ensemble will sound mature beyond their years. Armada is an original composition written by Victor López and inspired by the Spanish Armada, which was the fleet that sailed against England under the command of the Duke of Medina Sidonia in 1588, with the intention of overthrowing Elizabeth I. This one is a guaranteed winner at your first concert!

The sense of peace and tranquility of twilight on a summer's evening inspires this lovely lyrical offering. An excellent teaching opportunity for phrasing and expression, As Twilight Falls provides a moment of contrast on any young band's concert performance.

One of the best-known themes from the third movement of Antonio Vivaldi's innovative Four Seasons (Opus 8) suite, L'autunno (Autumn) is a natural choice for young players. Continuing with Michael's popular series of “Celtic Air and Dance” arrangements, the third installment opens with “Red is the Rose” (or “Loch Lomond”) in a flowing ballad treatment. The lively “Bill Sullivan's Polka” follows and features various sections of the band. The original work, scored for unaccompanied choir, was an inspired effort by Ukraine-born composer and educator Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych. Douglas Wagner’s new setting, as the title implies, features your clarinetists giving them a left-handed Christmas workout. Easily forgotten as the monster hit that it was, the song was a delicate and melodic ingredient that had a definite place in making up the Beatlemania of 1964. Originally included on their Please Please Me lbum, now arranged for beginning band, this Victor López rendition of Do You Want to Know a Secret will be a sure hit with both your audience and students alike

Portraying three characters from the Harry Potter universe, composer Alexandre Desplat musically illustrates the mysterious Kreacher, the noble Dobby, and the nefarious thief Mundungus. A simple, yet amusing melody from the blockbuster film that can be used to introduce dissonance and reinforce accidentals and courtesy accidentals with your students.

Look up the word “Gizmo,” and you will find references to its origin in the slang used by United States Marines and Navy personnel when referring to a “gadget” of unknown origin or design. Ralph Ford’s inventive work for your first-year players uses a ratchet in the percussion section to musically depict a gizmo. Great fun!.

Hurakan is the name of the Mayan god of wind, fire, and storm. Meaning one legged, the word is most likely the origin of the word hurricane. Michael Story's original overture is filled with cyclonic energy!

Antonín Dvorák’s Largo from his 9th Symphony From the New World is a favourite for audiences here and abroad for its simplistic, yet moving melody. Magical Hats and Happenings is a programmatic work that depicts a far-away mystical land where broomsticks abound and potions are brewed. Peek around any corner and you will find a wide variety of magical mayhem. A journey has begun and all sections of the band are invited. Through chromatic figures, trombone glissandos, and tasteful percussion writing, a magical world is created.

Gustav Holst's First Suite in E-flat for Military Band, one of the first pieces written exclusively for military bands, was composed in 1909. This arrangement is based on the second theme of the March, a very lyrical melody reminiscent of British folk music. This setting brings this cherished work to the stands of your beginners. A welcomed addition to the beginning band repertoire!

Gaining popularity during the American Civil War to the present day, the melody was written around 1856 by William Steffe. Julia Ward Howe wrote the current words to the song as The Battle Hymn of he Republic in 1861. Jerry Brubaker presents this wonderful and well-known American patriotic song in this easy arrangement scored just for your beginning band!

Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye was initially recorded by the pop-rock group Steam and became a number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the late '60s. Based on the Latin text Veni, Veni, Emmanuel, the lyrics for the popular carol O Come, O Come Emmanuel were written by John M. Neale in the mid 1800s. A wonderful setting to reinforce phrasing and musicality, Michael Story’s stirring setting will warm the hearts of your students and audiences alike.

Solo claves usher in the authentic Latin percussion section that sets the style for Pico Rivera. A simple but effective bass line joins the percussion section in establishing an interesting accompaniment for the syncopated melody that follows. The inspiration for Racing the Sun comes from a phrase used by solar-powered car enthusiasts to escribe the act of piloting their exotic vehicles. Composed in the style of a Cajun two-step, the simple melody is stated first by the trumpets with a zydeco-inspired accompaniment. An optional advanced trombone part is included with New Orleans style tailgate effects. See the Conquering Hero Comes was composed by the great baroque composer George Friedrich Handel and is a chorus from his popular Oratorio Judas Maccabaeus. The work was composed in 1746 and was first performed in Covent Garden, London in 1747. In 1884, Edmund Louis Budry wrote new words to this chorus to create the very stirring and well known hymn Thine Be the Glory. This theme and variations arrangement of Handel’s famous piece features all sections of the band and makes a very effective concert opener or finale for young bands. Effective as an opener or closer, this is a satisfying way to introduce students to a significant composer. - The Instrumentalist

This arrangement showcases two beautiful English carols in an easy-to-play arrangement for your young band. In the Bleak Midwinter, a tune written by Gustav Holst, begins this medley in classic style. Opportunities abound for working on legato phrasing. The lively traditional carol The Holly and the Ivy follows in 3/4 time to bring this work to an engaging close.

Two traditional Irish folk songs are featured in this colourful arrangement: Star of the County Down and Brennan on the Moor.

The first modal episode begins with a chant-like melody in G Aeolian mode (natural minor) that is reminiscent of early medieval music. The full brass section answers with simple block chords that accentuate the modal tonality. The Allegro that follows is set in B-flat Mixolydian mode (major scale with a flatted seventh). A dance-like melody dominates this episode and the percussion section is featured in a simple question-and-answer exchange.
