An ethereal opening features solo alto saxophone leading to a tuneful and poignant legato theme. The second half of the piece features a rhythmic driving Allegro that leads to a rousing conclusion. (5:25)

This work takes listeners on an imaginative journey in two extended movements, aboard a yacht heading towards the American east coast. The first movement, Sunrise at Sea and the Ocean Awakes, is a lively musical picture of the sun rising over the ocean and the beginnings of this exciting voyage that none-the-less must yield to the unbendable will of the sea. The second movement, Homeward Bound and Spindrift, thrust the yacht into turbulent water that it must survive before it can arrive at home and enter the safetly of the harbour. Bon voyage! Autumn on White Lake was commissioned by Lakeland High School of White Lake, Michigan. Sounds that conjure golden leaves, crisp air and rustic memories envelop your ensemble as well as the audience in this flourishing work as it recalls an October visit to this beautiful region. Duration: 6:30

The folk melody “Ukrainian Bell Carol” was sung in many Ukrainian villages in celebration of the New Year. Bell Carol a la Big Band is a fresh and clever treatment of the traditional carol. Contemporary harmonies are used throughout, and the infectious “Jazz Waltz Swing” feel makes this arrangement distinctively hip and cool. This is the favourite “Bell Carol” set in a way unlike any other arrangement you have heard before!

Beyond the Horizon is a dynamic composition encompassing majestic brass fanfares and sweeping melodic lines. The piece is comprised of two themes that musically paint a picture of the Earth’s breathtakingly beautiful horizon.

Blazon means coat of arms or decoration and this march is a work that can be proudly displayed by your concert band as a work that will make them shine. It opens with an extensive fanfare, played by the trumpets, horns and low brass instrument. As the tonality changes, so does the orchestration as the wind section present a new theme. Eventually the winds are joined by the brass section, creating a full sound. The music makes its way back to the fanfare, but this time it is played by the entire band, bringing the piece to a triumphant close. Duration: 3:20

The Cambrian period of our planet's geological history (roughly 500 million years ago) saw an explosion of plant and animal diversity evolving into many of the complex life forms familiar today. Richard Saucedo gives us an “explosion” of musical forms and surprises in this fast-paced and powerful work for mature bands. A recurring mallet and timpani pattern provides unity amidst a diverse musical palette that ranges from jazzy to celebratory. The sudden appearance of the familiar hymn “For the Beauty of the Earth” is both stunning and dramatic as it ties the entire work together. Wonderfully creative! Duration: 3:10

Cantique de Jean Racine was composed by Fauré in 1865. This magnificent setting for winds retains all the glory and colour of the full chorus and orchestra version, complete with harp and string bass.

In downtown Pittsburgh, the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers come together to form the Ohio River. This confluence of mighty waterways served as inspiration for this dynamic work for band. (Suite of Shaped Note Tunes for Band) Shaped note singing is an early American tradition handed down from colonial times, and still thrives today thanks in part to the well-known book The Sacred Harp. (Songs from this book were featured in the 2003 motion picture Cold Mountain.) In creating this distinctive and attractive setting for band, Johnnie Vinson uses the following traditional shaped note songs: The Morning Trumpet, Hallelujah, I'm Going Home, and Warrenton. Good Tidings of Great Joy is based on the biblical texts according to Isaiah and St. Luke. The christmas Story has been told many times in oratorio and cantata form, but this version is told instrumentally. The success and uniqueness of this composition results from the composers careful intertwining of over 40 Christmas Carols and themes including excerpts from Handel's Messiah and Bach's Christmas Oratorio. Each stran dis like a threat intricately woven, the more familiary the strands are to the listener, the finder the tapestry becomes. The musical substance of the piece is sufficient to tell the Christmas Story, althought the use of prgramme notes, citing the verses of the scripture used, or the optional narration provided, will help clarify the progress of the story to some of the listeners. In addition ot eh optional narration, an optional unison chorus on O Come O Ye Faithful is incorporated at the end of the composition.

Its title, Hail the Dragon!, references a work Philip sparke wrote in 1874, The Year of the Dragon, both of which were commissioned by the same person. The piece opens with alively and energetic fanfare. The mood becomes more subdued in the centre secion as the trumpet introduces a new theme that builds to an emotional climax. This leads to a recap of the opening fanfare which acts as a type of descant to short quotations from the last movement of The Year of the Dragon before reaching a thunderous finale. Duration: 4:45

This is cast in ternary form, the main theme is composed of original material and is suggested initially by a horn section fanfare, and is later stated in its entirety by the full band in Nobilmente style.

Bohemian Rhapsody is undoubtedly one of the most important songs in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. The song defied all convention in terms of form. It has no chorus. Instead, it comprised of an introduction, ballad, guitar solo, operatic interlude, hard rock section and coda. Perhaps the most mystifying aspect of the song is the lyrics, which are commonly thought to be autobiographical, although members of the band have never fully explained them. Debussy's 'Hommage a Rameau' is now available in an exotic wind orchestration by Donald Hunsberger - the 'Hommage' is from Debussy's ''Miroirs'' (1905) and was scored from the original piano edition Duration 7:53

Iberian Escapades was inspired by the resort architecture of Addison Mizner, whose Mediterranean-style estates launched a “Florida Renaissance” and inspired architects across North America. Mizner identified each of his Boca Raton villas with Spanish names, three of which are captured in this musical collage: El irasol (it watches the sun) is a fanciful Flamenco-style opening; El Solano (the east wind) presents exotic colours and romantic themes; and La Guerida (the bounty of war) ends the piece with an aggressive and energetic statement.

Feathered Serpent, God of Rain and Thunder, Lord of the Woods (God of Agriculture), and Lady Rainbow (Goddess of Earth and Moon) are deities featured in this portrait of Mayan mythology. Inspired by a recent trip to the Mayan village of Chichen Itza, Legends of the Yucatan is written in four sections, each one descriptive of a different Mayan God. Expanded percussion and exotic rhythms and harmonies are heard throughout.

Comprised of robust brass melodies, sweeping woodwind lines, and rhythmic ostinati, this composition captures the epic grandeur and beauty of Everest, the highest mountain on earth.

Neapolitan Holiday follows in the steps of three famous composer's works: Mendelssohn's 4th Symphony, Elgar's In the South: Alassio and Respighi's Roman Trilogy, using instrumental colours and textures to create an uplifting, sunny piece. Phiip sparke was inspired to write this piece about a festival day in Naples following a vacation he took in southern Italy. The festive opening is followed by a type of serenade. Barely has the parade marched by before the vivace dance begins as the festivities continue. Duration: 7:30

This narrative setting of Lincoln’s immortal “Gettysburg Address” is as beautiful as the speech is on paper, the best way to appreciate Lincoln’s musical instinct for timbre, phrasing, and rhythmic patterns is through recitation—and American composer Randol Alan Bass has created a unique musical opportunity for us to do that. In a charming traditional march form in cut-time, New Holland will have your audience sitting on the edge of their chairs. Composed by Harry Neidermyer and arranged by Jerry Brubaker, this will be a wonderful concert opener or closer.

The opening section of this beautiful lyric piece is meant to depict light breaking upon a darkened world. Filled with vibrant instrumental colors and textures, this piece expands to a climax followed by a serene closing passage. Originally conceived as a choral work by Guy Forbes, this has been skillfully transcribed for winds by Preston Hazzard. Duration: 3:30

As Santa starts his journey, bringing ‘Joy to the World’ by delivering presents to children - and adults too, he sets off on his majestic sleigh driven by his reindeer. A few elves have snuck into the sleigh to help. With a whoosh, he flies across the sky and over the snowy mountains. The music is in continuous motion, just like Santa’s Sleigh, as he has many presents to deliver before morning. The quiet moments in the music depict Santa’s arrival in small villages, away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, touching the hearts of people everywhere. During his journey, Santa discovers the elves who have apparently lost some of the presents. Santa offers a gentle reprimand before the presents are ventually found by Elfie, the youngest Elf. After all the presents have been delivered, Santa heads back home as he calls out, “I’ll be back next Christmas!”

Schumann's work contains 13 momvements that are adult reminiscences of his own childhood, whereas this work is not specifically autobiographical, although there are some elements of this piece that are drawn on personal experience/memories. Erich Korngold’s score to the Sea Hawk, written in 1940, plays more like a symphony than a soundtrack. Jerry Brubaker has created a picturesque suite for symphonic band of several of the majestic themes from this marvellous score.

Composed in 1942, Barber's Second Essay is a masterwork of concentrated musical drama, with a richness of texture comprised of highly charged and succinctly organized musical modules. The opening theme has a definite American flavor, which is followed by a fugal section that evolves from simple tonal patterns to polytonality. After an intensely rhythmic third section, all elements are combined in a huge climax and coda that round off the work. Expertly transcribed for symphonic band by Dr. George Schneider, this is certain to find its place in the standard repertoire for mature ensembles. Dur: 11:00

This breathtaking arrangement of Shenandoah was created at the request of well-known Pops conductor Michael Krajewski and was premiered in late summer, 2004, by the Houston Symphony Orchestra. This new setting for band makes a stunning addition to any concert programme. Numerous soloists are featured in this sweeping, lyric setting of the famous folksong melody with a panoramic, Americana feel. This would make a worthy addition to any Pops programme and can be played ffectively in an outdoor setting.

Spoon River is and American folk-dance or fiddle-tune, the same melody that was used by Percy Grainger in his composition, Spoon River. The first eight measures in unison woodwinds is followed by the main melody (harmonized quite traditionally) and seven variation, varying widely in character and length without the usual marked distinction found in more traditional theme and variation forms.

They Shall Run and Be Free portrays a daring and perilous slave escape. The opening main theme works its way through changing meters and dissonances and reflects running for one’s life while being chased and never knowing what to expect. The slow, middle section includes a setting of the beautiful Negro spiritual Oh Freedom, the simple yet poignant lyrics undoubtedly reflecting the attitude and desperation of many slaves.

Written in a grand “film score” style, this magnificent work opens with a dynamic fanfare featuring soaring brass and woodwind flourishes. Descriptive and evocative with every phrase, including a beautiful slow lyric section, transport your audience on a thrilling musical adventure with this impressive overture! Duration: 5:50

Two Songs Without Words was composed in 1906 and was dedicated to Ralph Vaughan Williams and is similar in style to his two suites for band. The Country Song opens with the principal theme as an unaccompanied clarinet solo, followed by its repetition in the full woodwind section. The main theme returns in a maestoso setting before fading into a quite closing. Marching Song is characterized by a distinctive running sixteenth note figure. The principal melody, first played by the low woodwinds, is punctuated by these same running sixteenth note fragments. Both themes are again repeated with much variation before the tempo picks up into a short coda-style ending.
