Originally written for percussionist Evelyn Glennie's Grammy-nominated Album 'Reflected in Brass', this wind band version is arranged in the style of Scott Bradley, for long the doyen of composers of music for animation. Cause for Celebration opens with a fanfare-style idea, followed by two quieter ideas before the fanfare returns, the music moving without a break into the celebration proper. The main idea of the Allegro is an energetic theme for full band which is interspersed with contrasting sections of the band. This ‘Symphonic Tone Poem for Brass, Wind and Percussion’ was commissioned by Philip Biggs and Richard Franklin for the 2003 All England Masters Brass Band Championship. The work transfers well to the concert band and is already being featured around the world. It is based on two principle themes of love and war which compete against each other in what can be broadly described as a cinematic structure. Originally scored by the legendary Luther Henderson for full orchestra and brass quintet, here is a great-sounding adaptation for concert band by Paul Murtha that features three classic Ellington compositions. From Call of the Cossacks (see above), Cossack Fire Dance, based on the folk song Mazeltov, brings to mind part of the Jewish wedding ceremony. Introduced by a Klezmer clarinet call, the music gives reign to the virtuosity of a variety of soloists.

This work was commissioned by, and is dedicated to the Regimental Band of Her Majesty’s Coldstream Guards and their Director of Music, Major O. Jones MBE. The brief was for a piece to celebrate the City of London. The first performance was given by The Regimental Band of Her Majesty’s Coldstream Guards under their music director Major Graham O. This delightful Grainger fanfare, entitled The Duke of Marlborough was originally written in March of 1939. The English folk tune is based on a melody sung by Mr. Henry Burstow and is also utilised as a countermelody in the first movement of Lincolnshire Posey. This Hunsberger edition, a warm addition to the Donald Hunsberger Wind Library is faithful to Grainger's intent and clarifies many intricacies. It offers a variety of performance opportunities serving as either an augmented brass ensemble fanfare or as one portion in a collage of shorter Grainger selections.

When Jeff Wayne’s musical adaptation H.G.Wells’ novel The War of the Worlds was originally released, no one would have believed that it would become so popular. The Eve of the War, the stunning opening scene of Wayne’s show, became a huge international hit single in its own right. This new arrangement by the highly respected British composer/arranger Ed Keeley retains all the drama and tension of the original atmospheric opening. A joy to perform and a pleasure to listen to. This work is cast in four movements based on Spanish subjects. No ‘folk-elements’ are used but the Spanish atmosphere is created by means of melody, rhythm, harmony and orchestration. This relatively brief yet energetic work certainly lives up to its title! Stretching harmonic boundaries and filled with rhythmic vitality, Richard Saucedo uses sections of mixed meters and a variety of unique orchestrational effects to create a stunning concert opener. Duration: 3:50

Gaelforce follows in Cry of the Celts style, and using three traditional folk tunes exploits the colour and variety of the modern wind band. Firstly, the slip jig, The Rocky Road to Dublin features the woodwind section. The Minstrel Boy, and the final reel, Tossing the Feathers, have both recently enjoyed renewed popularity courtesy of The Corrs. The Minstrel Boy here features the solo flugel horn in contrast with woodwind choir and mellow voices, while Tossing the Feathers is something of a tour de force for drums, woodwind, and eventually the whole band.

The work is continuous and the thematic material of each of the six sections closely related. The establishment - leadership, temporal and ecclesiastical power - are depicted in the stately march which opens the work (Church and State). The second section, Inn and Out, in an energetic hemiola rhythm, is concerned with the stews and low-life revels at the Boar's Head Tavern. This is interrupted and finally integrated with the Tavern Brawl and Gadshill Ambush of Starts and Fits. The mood changes and the ambivalence of Prince Hal's relationship with his father and surrogate father, Falstaff, is portrayed in a serene cor anglais solo. (Father and Son). Advance and Retreat is a recruiting march, derived from the Tavern Tune and leads into the last movement, Church and Status Quo, which deals with the rejection of Falstaff and the crowning of Price Hal. Order is restored with a majestic affirmation of the opening material.

from Ghost Train Trilogy. The piece that helped launch Eric Whitacre's career in wind band composing! In this highly programmatic work, Eric transforms a story from American folklore of a supernatural locomotive that roars throughout the Western U.S. Rich in special effects and unique compositional techniques, this dynamic piece creates vivid aural images as the train leaves the station and passes through a varied landscape.

Glenn Miller and his orchestra helped define the sound of the swing era. Here is an entertaining and authentically scored medley that includes the signature tunes “In the Mood,” “A String of Pearls,” “Tuxedo Junction” and “Pennsylvania 6-5000.”

From the king of swing, Sammy Nestico brings his inimitable symphonic jazz style to the concert stage. Originally written for the Boston Pops Orchestra, Sammy has re-worked this marvelous Christmas setting for winds, featuring the classic carol Good King Wenceslas in a variety of jazz-flavored styles. The horn solos are cued and the piano part is optional. Sure to be a favourite for years to come.

The piece takes as its inspiration the happy and sad masks which symbolise the Commedia dell’Arte (which features Harlequin as one of its main characters) and comprises two movements, a slow modal ballad followed by a frenetic faster movement. Saving Private Ryan is certainly one of Steven Spielberg's most powerful films. The brilliant John Williams score creates part of this power. Hymn to the Fallen one of the most powerful and emotional melodies which appears during the closing credits, evokes a feeling of hope and strength amid the overall tone of reverence. Philip Sparke has transcribed this moving work for concert band using John Williams original orchestral score as the source. American Grade 4. Duration: 7:30

Some of the thematic material for this suite of three dances is adapted from music originally written for the Royal Shakespeare Company. The precise location of Illyria was not important to Shakespeare; what excited him was the resonance of the word itself and the romance of all far away, make-believe places. Illyria is “Never Never Land”, and the composer was intrigued with the idea of inventing dances for such a place.

After a bombastic rapid-fire brass fanfare, the woodwinds take hold of a soaring melody that is then interspersed with full ensemble splashes. Woodwind flourishes and expansive scoring lend a grandiose splendor to the overall effect. Exciting and powerful writing for today's wind band! Duration: 3:45

Follow the far-fetched story of an “incredible” family of crime fighters along with their flashy music written in the campy style of a mid-1960s spy thriller. John Williams’ film scoring at its best! Here is Ralph Ford’s Suite from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Probably the most popular Canadian Brass concert opening number, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” retains the famous, slow, New Orleans-style introduction. In true Canadian Brass style, this one really lets loose for some great Dixie fun that's within the playing abilities of most grade 3 bands. Included are short written solos for clarinet, trumpet and trombone.

These are gradually introducted as accented notes over the opening ostinato. This modal music is gradually juxtaposed with a more conventional minor scale originally creating conflict and tension, but eventually harmony between these two sound-worlds. Commissioned by Kenneth Bell, principal flute of the Central Band of the Royal Air Force, this delightful work is challenging but approachable and the perfect vehicle for your star flautist! (Grade 5) Performance time 13’31”. “Good flautists will find this a good piece to add to their repertoires, as it presents different challenges to the standard solo fare. The solo line is particularly well set against the band as it rarely travels to the lower register of the flute. The work opens with an extended section of lyricism followed by skittish dance. Since a child, the composer has been fascinated by Latin American rhythms – especially the tango, a dance with strong roots in Argentina. From the 1994 version of this heartwarming holiday movie, Bruce Broughton created a marvelous original soundtrack that continues to remain popular. This authentic-sounding adaptation combines the best elements from the overture into a concise and impressive work that will be a treat for any holiday audience.

This work falls into three movements which are played without a break. The outer two movements are full of energy and surround a tender central section with delicate quartet writing and a broad climax for the whole band. This work was commissioned in 1996 by the Arosa Cultural committee and first performed in Arosa in that year. The majestic introduction opens with trombones and euphonium, heralding a legato theme, chorale-like in character. A pair of flutes introduce a new theme. A trumpet introduces a series of highly syncopated solos, which feature many metre changes, and the tempo increases when playful motifs are exchanged between various sections of the band. A solo clarinet introduces an expressive tune. A brass chorale follows, with interruptions from the flute and bassoon, until the clarinet tune is played by the whole band. This reaches a climax and the mood subsides to reach a quiet horn chord. The broad legato tune returns and the excitement increases until the march theme triumphantly returns to full band. This leads to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare and closes the work emphatically. Cast in three short movements the work endeavours to recreate the pioneering spirit of the journey across America (the then ‘New World’) as this vast continent was opened up and its wonders exposed. The three dance episodes that make up the suite are symbolic in an analogous sense to this ‘reaching’ principle: the first – Earth Dance – is a vigorous overture, pushing out the frontiers; the interlude – Moon Dance – contemplates the huge distances to be crossed and Sun Dance represents the realisation of the American dream, rhythmic and full of energy. Written in affectionate tribute to America and its people, New World Dances was rather symbolically completed on July 4th! Conceived as a raucous 'opera buffo' style overture, this new work from composer Eric Whitacre is the perfect way to start any concert. A significant figure in American music, Norman Dello Joio composed several works for band that have become part of the standard literature. This composition from 1975 features Mediterranean folk dance influences and offers a distinctive and dramatic setting for band. (American Grade 4)

Composed in 1986, this fast-paced and dynamic work took the symphonic world by storm. Available here in a playable setting for school ensembles, Richard Saucedo transposed the key down a third from the original and skillfully adapted some of the more complicated rhythmic patterns without sacrificing any of the excitement and drive. This concert march was commissioned by the BBC for the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) as their entry in the march style new music composition. This outstanding march was the outright winner. Commissioned for the “Musikpreis Grenchen 1990”, a contest for new music in Switzerland, this attractive suite is in three movements which each pay tribute to the stage. OVERTURE is a brisk and lively movement, full of fun, ENTR’ACTE a tender interlude and FINALE a romp for the whole band. This work is subtitled Prelude and Transfigurations for Brass, Wind and Percussion. It is derived from Wagner’s Prelude to his opera Tristan and Isolde and consists of a series of tableaux-mood pictures which alternate between a romantic idiom and tritone-style aggressive music. The work is cast as a prelude and ensuing set of fourteen variations and is meant to be played as a continuous piece. Rarely has a musical in modern times taken Broadway by storm the way this huge hit from Stephen Schwartz has done. The story line of the Wicked Witch of the West is intriguing and the music is filled with depth and beauty.
