The composwer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abgreviated as Wu Xing, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese throught, including science, philosophy, medicine and astrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationshipos between five elements in all walks of life. An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquied (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cyle continues. I was particularly interested in the cyle of emations: Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. so Evolution has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transfored, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. Deliverance is an exciting concert suite by Etienne Crausaz. The first movement is in the style of a siciliana, starting out quiet and calmly, then slowly building in excitement and energy. The second movement, a scherzo, allows for colourful sounds and timbres and is full of humorous musical elements and contrasts. The third movement, the vivace, presents a dialogue between the higher and lower registers of the band with plenty of time changes. Deliverance is an action-packed composition, full of colour and contrast.

The famous Puccini motifs in this work are taken from Tosca (E lucevan le stelle), Turandot (Nessun dorma), Gianni Schicci (O mio babbino caro) and a quite funny little persifl age of the aria Senti L’ora e vicina from Tosca. The Spirit of Puccini has testing moments for each of the principal players of the band´s sections. Even although the music was inspired by this famous Italian composer, Hermann Pallhuber has succeeded in creating a piece of ‘real band music’ combining both the Italian influences and the modern British brass band sound. Symphonic Contrasts is an original composition in three harmoniously connected movements. The first movement opens with a brilliant introduction and presents two themes that are developed simultaneously and become intermingled. The second movement is at a slower tempo and gives several soloists the opportunity to showcase their expressive skills. The last movement begins with a musical dialogue between timpani, bongos and cymbals. Duration: 9:00.

Toccata e Fantasia was inspired by the composers’ love of Anton Bruckner’s fantastic instrument scoring in his symphonies. Within Toccata e Fantasia Thomas Doss has used several of Bruckner’s motifs. In addition to these obvious references you will also find hints of Eastern music with the small motifs being repeated again and again in a sort of Indian guru’s mantra, and an improvised blues section with a Big Band feel!
